Stanford Town Center Design Team Charge

The objective of the Town Center design team is to develop an initiative that will:

  • Create a central point of social connection: the “hearth” of the university
  • Facilitate community-building, authentic social interaction, intellectual interchange
  • Promote a proactive approach to human interconnection in an age of distraction and mediated disconnect
  • Envision the Town Center as a vital element in fulfilling the mission of the university
  • Re-imagine services, functions, and programs
  • Plan for the next 30-50 years, informed by research and input about the needs of the future as we can envision them today
  • Use this central node as an opportunity to tell the story of Stanford’s mission, value and activities
  • Primary audience: campus community (students, faculty, staff, alumni).
  • Additional audiences: broader Bay Area community; Stanford community members at other Stanford sites (e.g. Redwood City, off-site work spaces, BOSP locations); campus visitors
